Lagos State Assembly Approves N4.4 Trillion Budget for 2026, what are Lagosians saying?

The Lagos 2026 budget is out! Learn how N4.4 trillion will be spent on roads, housing, jobs, and government services for Lagos residents.

Over the past year, we’ve heard plenty of Lagosians complain about the state, and underwhelming is putting it mildly. From crumbling infrastructure to hygiene issues, life in the Lagos hasn’t been as smooth as we’d like.

After much debate and discussion about the state’s wellbeing, a new budget has finally been approved, and it’s made by… the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The House has approved a N4.4 trillion budget for 2026, a major step in planning how the state will spend money to serve residents better.

Budget Approved After Review

On Thursday, lawmakers led by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa passed a bill authorising the state to issue and spend a total of N4,444,509,776,438 in the next fiscal year.

The figure was presented by Hon. Olumoh Sa’ad, Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget. He broke down how the money will be spent:

  • Recurrent expenditure: N2,052,000,000,000 — for salaries, running the government, and administrative costs

  • Capital expenditure: N2,185,000,000,000 — for projects and infrastructure development

Clearly, the state is trying to focus on building infrastructure and improving services that touch everyday life.

Budget Themes and Purpose

Lawmakers described the 2026 budget as the “Budget of Shared Prosperity” — a plan designed to be balanced, growth-oriented, and aimed at making life better for Lagosians.

The budget is anchored on four main pillars:

  1. Improving human-centred development — investing in people, health, and education

  2. Building modern, adaptive infrastructure — better roads, bridges, and transport systems

  3. Supporting a thriving economy — creating jobs, encouraging businesses, and boosting local industries

  4. Strengthening effective governance — ensuring government works efficiently and transparently

These pillars are in line with the state government’s long-term plan to widen opportunities and improve living standards across Lagos.

Your Turn, Lagosians

So, what do you think? Is this budget a real chance to improve the state by at least 20%, or is it just another political tool for election season?

Either way, it’s now out in the open, and Lagosians need to keep watch and hold leaders accountable.
