UNILAG Retains Spot in 2026 QS World University Rankings, Highlights Need for More Investment in Nigerian Higher Education
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has once again secured a place in the QS World University Rankings, maintaining its position in the 1001–1200 band for the 2026 edition. This ranking, released on Thursday by global higher education analyst Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), underscores UNILAG’s continued relevance on the global academic stage—even as Nigerian universities face significant challenges in climbing higher in international metrics.
UNILAG’s Centre for Information and Systems (CIS) remains a vital part of the university’s academic and research structure, contributing to advancements in technology, data systems, and digital transformation in education. While the university's overall ranking remains unchanged from 2025, the sustained recognition is a testament to the institution's resilience and its faculty’s dedication to academic excellence.
UNILAG was one of only three Nigerian universities to appear on the 2026 list, alongside the University of Ibadan (UI)—also ranked 1001–1200—and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, which debuted in the 1201–1400 range after not being ranked in 2025. These three institutions represent a narrow fraction of the 297 universities currently accredited by Nigeria’s National Universities Commission (NUC).
Globally, the 2026 QS rankings evaluated 1,501 institutions from 106 countries. Across Africa, Nigerian universities trailed their regional peers, with Egypt boasting 20 ranked universities, South Africa 11, and Tunisia four. Ghana and Morocco had two each, while Kenya, Libya, Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia each had one representative on the list.
The University of Lagos, through its research hubs like CIS, continues to demonstrate its capacity to compete on the world stage. However, the stagnant rankings reflect the urgent need for increased funding, policy support, and global partnerships to elevate Nigerian universities into higher tiers.
