Sanwo-Olu Confirms Lagos Blue Line Rail Extension to Okokomaiko by 2026
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding the Lagos Blue Line Rail, announcing that the next phase will extend the service to Okokomaiko by 2026.
The governor shared this update via his official X handle on Thursday, also confirming the arrival of three new train sets totaling 12 coaches to boost passenger capacity on the existing route.
“We’ve taken delivery of three brand-new train sets — 12 coaches in total — for the Lagos Blue Line Rail. This means shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for everyone,” Governor Sanwo-Olu wrote.
A More Efficient Commute for Lagosians
The addition of new coaches is expected to reduce passenger wait times and improve travel comfort, aligning with the state government’s broader goal of building a reliable and efficient urban transit system.
The Blue Line Rail, which commenced commercial operations on September 4, 2023, has already moved nearly two million passengers as of September 2024, according to data from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
Full Extension by 2026
Governor Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that work is actively ongoing to extend the Blue Line corridor westward to Okokomaiko, significantly expanding coverage for commuters across the state.
“I know it’s been a long time coming, but I truly believe we’re building something that will change how we move around this city for the better,” he stated.
Transforming Urban Mobility
The Blue Line Rail is part of the larger Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) project, aimed at reducing road congestion, improving mobility, and fostering economic productivity through modern public transportation.
The project is a critical component of the THEMES Plus Agenda, the state government’s strategic development blueprint focused on transportation, infrastructure, and sustainability.
