LASEMA Flags Off 2025 Flood-Free Lagos Campaign, Reaffirms Readiness for Emergency Response

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reiterated its readiness to effectively manage any flood-related emergencies during the 2025 rainy season.

Speaking at the official flag-off of the 2025 Flood-Free Lagos Campaign on Friday, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, emphasized the state’s proactive stance in addressing flood risks, following warnings from the Federal Government listing Lagos among high-risk states.

The campaign included strategic visits to the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

“We’ve mapped out vulnerable areas including Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Lekki, Apapa, and Amuwo-Odofin,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu said. “We are fully prepared for any eventuality.”

He highlighted the state’s significant progress in emergency preparedness, noting that under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Command and Control Centre now operates as a full-fledged agency with a General Manager at the helm.

“The emergency number, 112, remains active for rapid communication. We’ve also conducted simulations and risk assessments with all key stakeholders,” he added.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu revealed that three relief camps have been established across the state’s senatorial districts, with trained grassroots responders ready to act swiftly during emergencies.

“Our goal is to build resilient communities. We understand that the grassroots are often the hardest hit, and we’ve tailored our efforts accordingly,” he said.

He also praised the Ministry of Environment for proactive steps such as clearing drainages, desilting gutters, and enforcing environmental laws against illegal structures that block water flow.

“We’re addressing both natural and man-made causes of flooding. Improved outcomes like lower mortality and morbidity rates reflect the strategic investments and strong political will of Mr. Governor,” he stated.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu urged Lagosians to support the state’s efforts through regular tax payments, stressing that disaster management is a shared responsibility.

He commended LASEPA’s General Manager, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, for his expertise and leadership, describing him as a valuable partner in inter-agency emergency collaboration.

In response, Dr. Ajayi pledged continued support to LASEMA’s mission and welcomed the team warmly.

Meanwhile, LASEMA also received a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency, led by Mr. Wellington Adebawo, Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor on Emergency Response, who commended Lagos State for its forward-thinking approach to disaster management.
