Lagos State Government Warns Residents to Prepare for Heavy Rains and Flash Floods
The Lagos State Government has urged residents—especially those living in low-lying or flood-prone areas—to stay alert, as more heavy rainfall and flash floods are expected in the coming days.
In a statement released on Saturday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said data from the state’s weather stations show upcoming thunderstorms and widespread rainfall across Lagos. Satellite images predict dense cloud cover and intense downpours, which could lead to flash flooding.
Wahab explained that areas near rivers and lagoons are at higher risk, with potential strong water currents. He advised residents to stay indoors during the rains unless absolutely necessary and to wait until the rain slows down before heading out.
He also urged parents to watch over their children, many of whom are still on mid-term break, to ensure they don’t play in the rain or attempt to swim in floodwater.
The Commissioner warned both motorists and pedestrians to avoid wading through flooded roads, as such actions are dangerous—cars may be submerged and lives could be lost.
Because Lagos is a coastal city, Wahab said the rising lagoon water can cause tidal locks, which prevent normal water drainage and increase the chance of flooding.
He emphasized that residents should never dump waste into drains, especially during rain, as it blocks the drainage system and makes flooding worse. The government continues to clean and maintain drainage channels year-round, but extra caution from the public is crucial during intense weather.
“Whenever the rainfall exceeds normal levels,” Wahab noted, “it takes a collective effort to reduce its impact.”
