Lagos State Begins Official Registration of Beach Operators to Improve Safety and Tourism Standards

As part of ongoing efforts to boost safety, cleanliness, and quality of service across its tourism sector, the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, has launched a major initiative to regulate and register all beach operators in the State.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, made this announcement during the Ministerial Press Briefing held to mark the sixth year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in Alausa, Ikeja.

She explained that the initiative will help improve safety measures, environmental management, and overall experiences for both residents and visitors at beaches across Lagos.

“We’re working closely with community leaders, environmental experts, and beach owners to ensure all our waterfronts are safe, clean, and welcoming,” she said. “Our vision is to make Lagos a world-class beach tourism destination.”

As part of this broader effort, the Ministry has also begun revitalizing key tourist sites, including Topo Island in Badagry, Ilashe Beach Resort, Eko Tourist Beach Resort, and Akodo Beach. These locations are being upgraded to attract private-sector investment and promote sustainable tourism.

In addition to beach regulation, the Ministry is finalizing a statewide licensing and registration system for hotels, lounges, bars, nightclubs, and other hospitality businesses.

Benson-Awoyinka revealed the launch of a new online platform, https://lasgtourism.com, where tourism operators can register easily and receive a 30-day provisional certificate, followed by a one-year license after verification.

The platform is designed to digitally track and regulate tourism establishments in Lagos, ensuring transparency and quality control. All registered businesses will be required to display their certificates in their reception areas.

The Commissioner warned that any tourism business that fails to comply with these new laws will face strict penalties, stressing that the government is committed to building a tourism industry rooted in excellence, accountability, and innovation.

“These changes are necessary if we want Lagos to become Africa’s top destination for tourism and entertainment,” she said.
