Keep Lagos Clean This Sallah: LAWMA Urges Proper Waste Disposal During Eid-el-Kabir
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, assured residents that the agency is fully prepared to manage the expected increase in waste during and after Sallah.
“Eid-el-Kabir is a time of celebration, but we must not forget our responsibilities to keep our environment clean,” he said. “We’ve made arrangements to ensure smooth and timely waste collection in all parts of Lagos.”
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the importance of properly handling and disposing of animal waste, food leftovers, and packaging materials, adding that LAWMA officials and enforcement teams will be on ground to monitor activities and ensure compliance with hygiene standards.
He warned against dumping refuse in drainage systems, road medians, or open spaces, noting that such actions threaten public health and could attract fines. He also urged butchers and livestock sellers to use only approved slaughter points to maintain public safety.
While wishing all Muslim faithful a peaceful Eid, he reminded Lagosians to:
-
Always bag their waste properly
-
Use containers or bins
-
Ensure timely pickup through registered PSP operators
In a related effort, LAWMA also joined the world to mark World Environment Day 2025 on June 5th, themed “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution.”
Dr. Gbadegesin said the theme aligns with LAWMA’s vision of making Lagos a cleaner and healthier city, starting with everyday choices. The agency is partnering with schools, communities, and religious groups to promote small daily actions that can have big environmental impacts—like separating recyclables, clearing gutters, and discouraging street dumping.
“World Environment Day is a reminder that environmental protection starts with all of us,” he said. “Let’s reflect on how our habits affect the earth and work together to protect the environment for future generations.”
