Lagos State Invests Over ₦8.4 Billion in 143 Cultural, Arts, and Tourism Events in One Year
Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has revealed that the State Government allocated over ₦8,475,238,265.00 in the past year to support and celebrate 143 cultural, arts, and tourism events, including festivals.
She made this announcement on Wednesday while addressing the press during the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing at Alausa, Ikeja, marking the sixth year in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
According to Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka, this investment underscores Lagos State’s strategic commitment to consolidating its position as Africa’s leading hub for arts, culture, and entertainment, while also encouraging the active participation of cultural and creative-oriented individuals and organizations.
She stated:
“This investment reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s unwavering vision to build a resilient creative economy that empowers talents, preserves our rich heritage, and amplifies the global visibility of Lagos as a dynamic cultural capital. From local community festivals to international art exhibitions, these programs are engines for job creation, youth empowerment, tourism promotion, and economic revitalisation.”
Further emphasizing the Ministry’s efforts, the Commissioner highlighted that, apart from direct financial support, the Ministry issued over 124 endorsement letters to creative entrepreneurs and organizations, enabling them to secure additional sponsorships and partnerships for their projects.
She explained that these initiatives span key sectors such as music, film, fashion, visual arts, theatre, and cultural tourism, many of which have drawn both domestic and international audiences, boosting Lagos State’s reputation as a thriving creative destination on the continent.
Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to fostering collaborations that will propel growth and innovation in the cultural and entertainment sectors. She added that the Ministry remains:
“Open to private sector partnerships and stakeholder engagement that will sustainably transform Lagos into a global beacon for the creative economy.
