Governor Sanwo-Olu Holds Strategic Partnership Talks with EU Ambassador in Lagos

On Thursday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State met with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, to discuss strengthening Lagos-EU relations and boosting multilateral business ties.

The high-level meeting, held at the State House in Marina, centered around the proposed ‘Omi Eko’ project—a visionary €410 million initiative aimed at transforming Lagos’ inland waterways into a world-class transportation hub. The project will be jointly financed by the EU, French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB), and the Lagos State Government.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed excitement about the project, which will feature high-capacity electric boats, expanded stations, and improved security and surveillance for the waterways. He noted that the initiative aligns with his administration's vision of delivering an integrated urban transportation system.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of timely funding and swift commencement of civil works, stating, “Omi Eko is one of the legacy projects my administration will bequeath to change the face of public transport system in Lagos.”

The Governor also welcomed the EU’s intent to increase investments in Lagos, particularly in the technology sector, and applauded the EU’s plan to introduce its Infrastructure Development Bank into Nigeria’s financial system.

Mr. Mignot conveyed optimism, announcing that agreements for the Omi Eko project are ready to be signed, with the groundbreaking event scheduled for June 2025. He highlighted Lagos as the hub of European economic activities in Nigeria and emphasized the commitment to strengthening cooperation, particularly through a more strategic and flexible European Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting marks a significant milestone in the Lagos-EU partnership, setting the stage for transformative infrastructural development and expanded economic opportunities in the State.
