Lagos Ambulance Service Celebrates Major Milestones with 97.5% Emergency Response Rate
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) has achieved a 97.5% response rate to emergency calls between 2021 and 2025, attending to 44,152 out of 45,277 calls.
This was revealed by Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, during a recent review of LASAMBUS operations. She praised the team for their hard work and highlighted the need for continued public support to help save more lives.
Zero Deaths During Transit, Higher Survival Rates
Dr. Ogunyemi shared some of the service’s major wins:
-
Zero in-transit deaths in 2022 and 2025
-
100% survival rate for patients transported in 2025 (up from 60% in 2021)
-
36,919 patients treated over four years, with 11,200 in 2023 alone
She said this success is thanks to trained personnel, quick emergency response, and strong triage systems that stabilize patients quickly.
Challenges: Impersonators, Attacks, and Traffic Obstruction
Despite these achievements, LASAMBUS faces serious challenges:
-
Fake officials pretending to be part of the service
-
Vandalism of ambulances and equipment
-
Assaults on emergency workers
-
Drivers refusing to give ambulances the right of way
“Every second counts in an emergency. Blocking an ambulance can cost a life,” Dr. Ogunyemi warned.
She urged the public to always dial 767 or 112 for real emergency help and to avoid unofficial numbers or individuals.
LASAMBUS by the Numbers:
-
931 field operations completed in the last 4 years (350 in 2024 alone)
-
196 personnel, including:
-
64 Nurses
-
74 Community Health Workers
-
70 trained ambulance drivers
-
-
36 Mobile ICUs, 3 Mobile Clinics, and 5 Transport Ambulances
-
4 major bases and 26 ambulance points across Lagos
All staff are certified in Basic Life Support and First Aid, and 75% are trained in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, meaning they’re ready to handle even the most serious emergencies.
Infrastructure Upgrades
Renovations have been completed at ambulance bases in:
-
LASUTH
-
General Hospitals in Lagos, Ikorodu, and Badagry
A new base is being built in Eti-Osa MCC, and five ambulance points have been upgraded, including those at:
-
Old Lagos-Ibadan Toll Gate
-
Third Mainland Bridge
-
Anthony
-
Eti-Osa
-
Mile 12
These upgrades were funded by the Saving One Million Lives Programme for Results (SOML-PforR).
Looking Ahead
Dr. Ogunyemi also announced that plans are underway to upgrade LASAMBUS into a full agency, which would improve coordination and autonomy. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is currently reviewing the proposal.
“Our ambulance staff are true heroes,” she said. “Let’s support them and work together to build a safer, healthier Lagos—one emergency response at a time.”
